TOTAL FUNDS RAISED FOR THE QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL £10,000

THANK YOU TO ALL MY SPONSORS

To everyone who sponsored me and supported me in the Marathon des Sables 2007 a huge huge thank you.

You have helped me raise £10,000 of which every single penny has gone to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. This is a fantastic sum of money and is going to make such a difference to many of the staff and patients at the hospital.

The money is going to be divided equally between two groups within the hospital. One half of it will be directed towards the childrenÕs department where the staff labour tirelessly and many children suffer from malnutrition and a variety of infections (further information in my earlier charity page). The other group in the hospital who will benefit from the funds raised will be in the adult department where they have a fund called CHIRA which in Chichewa means Òget betterÓ or ÒhealÓ. This fund is specifically to help adults who are suffering from the massive HIV epidemic that is particularly rife in Malawi which brings TB and numerous other infections in its wake.

Once again, I would like assure everyone who has donated money to this hospital, that every penny will go towards medicine and equipment to help the patients in these to areas of the hospital, and not one penny will be wasted.

Although running the Marathon des Sables 2007 was a huge goal and ambition for me in itself, raising funds for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was the main aim. Whilst I was in the desert, each day we received messages via email from all our supporters, friends and family to encourage us and cheer us on. It was a great source of motivation and comfort when lying exhausted in filthy sweaty clothes with weary legs, blistered feet and fairly revolting food to eat, being able to read messages of support. For me receiving a message from the doctors I know at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital informing me that all the staff were cheering me on and avidly checking my results each day was a huge source of inspiration and gave me great determination each day Ð there was never any doubt for me that I wasnÕt going to finish, but knowing there were wards of patients, nurses and doctors routing for me was a definite spur.

I am hoping to return in the not too distant future to Malawi in order to revisit the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, to see how the money has been spent, and as soon as I have done this I will report back to you all.

In the meantime I leave you with the final words of my race report:

ÒWe have earned the respect of the Sahara Desert, it has allowed us to pass through, and for me it has crept into my heart with each grain of sand. It has been a magical week. I have met and become friends with some of the most wonderful people I am ever likely to meet. I feel very privileged to have been a part of this week. I have fallen in love, with several fit men, but also with the Sahara Desert, and I know that I will be back.Ó

Thank you all so much for your support and generosity
